Here are some more idioms:
Bread and butter: the source of profit, the source of one's food.
Ups and downs: the mixture of good and bad things that happen to people.
Life and soul: the most lively and amusing person.

There are proverbs for just about every circumstance, and they can be fit to any situation.
Here are some more proverbs for kids

Proverbs:

Similes:
Quick as a flash.
Dumb as an ox.
White as a sheet.
Then there's a great joke my Dad once told me. A friend of his saw a really old stove and said, "This stove is so old, it remembers Captain Cook!" Hey, it's not a simile, or a proverb. But it is certainly funny.
