VCE study score and Median VCE study score
VCE results are recorded in terms of Study Scores. VCAA provides a Study Score for each Unit 3 & 4 study, based on the marks a student receives for each graded study. Achievement is assessed on a scale of 0 to 50, and in all studies the average study score across the state is 30. However, it is not a score out of 50. It is a ranking, or relative position, which shows a student’s performance compared with all other students who took that study in that year. A student with a Study Score of 30 is near the middle of the cohort, or has performed better than about half of all students who took that study in that year. A student with a Study Score of 40 has performed better than about 91% of all students who took that study in that year.

What this means is that the middle student in any study will have a Study Score of about 30.

The study score is a ranking which shows a student's performance compared with all other students who took that study in that year. In fact it's not really a score, rather it's a relative position. A student with a Study Score of 30 has performed better than about half of all students who took that study in that year, ie, the student is in the middle of cohort. A study score of 40 doesn't mean top 20%, but about top 9%. In other words, the student has performed better than about 91% of all students who took that study in that year. The median study score is the middle score when all the study scores obtained by students of their school are ranked from highest to lowest, and so it represents a "typical" level of achievement in the school.
