Sample questions and answers for revamped GAT
From 2022, the revamped GAT (General Achievement Test) will be used to assess year 11 and 12 students’ literacy and numeracy skills along with their general knowledge, critical and creative thinking. The GAT test will also be taken by VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning) students. Those completing a scored VCE vocational education and training unit 3-4 sequence will also sit the test.
The test contains two sections. Section A will measure students' skills in literacy and numeracy and will be taken by both VCE and VCAL students. For Section B, the questions and writing task will be similar to those in prior GATs (up until 2021). The single writing task on Section B of the 2022 GAT will be similar in format to the prior Writing Task 2. Section B will assess skills in English, maths, science, technology, the arts and humanities, plus critical and creative thinking. It will be taken by VCE students but not those studying VCAL. The duration of the test is three hours. The GAT will be held on 7 September this year. It will return to its traditional June date from next year.
- the literacy and numeracy scores will be recorded on VCE and VCAL school-leavers’ graduating certificates, giving prospective employers a better sense of whether they have demonstrated literacy and numeracy skills expected of a secondary school graduate.
- In most cases, the scores will not contribute to a student’s ATAR.
- From 2023, the VCE and VCAL will be merged into a single senior secondary graduating certificate.
- Students are not expected to study for the GAT, which is used as a yardstick for students’ exam results and school-based assessments. GAT results also come into play as insurance for students who miss an exam or exams and must receive a derived examination score.
