How to increase VirtualBox hard disk size on Windows

1. Shut down the virtual machine – ensure its state is set to Powered Off, not Saved.
2. Back up your virtual hard disk file first. This is recommended. Errors can occur with the following resize operation. For example, resize command can only increase hard disk size, but cannot shrink disk size. if you accidentally expanded too much, you may not be able to use it anymore. It’s always good to have backups.
3. From command line, change to VirtualBox’s program files folder, for example, cd “C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox”.
4. Enlarge virtual hard disk by running
VBoxManage modifyhd “<path to your .vdi file>" --resize 122880

where path to your .vdi file is the location of the VirtualBox disk you want to resize. It must not be the backup file. Use two dashes before resize in the command above. It will resize the virtual disk to 122880MB (120 GB), for example.

You now have a larger virtual hard disk. However, this process doesn’t enlarge the partition on the virtual hard disk. So you won’t be able to access any of new space yet.

5. Extend the Virtual Machine’s Partition
You’ll now need to enlarge the guest operating system’s partition as if you were extending a partition on a real hard disk in a physical computer.
Use the Start Menu or the Control Panel search, type in partition into the search box. You’ll see a link to the Disk Management screen, just right-click on the partition that you want to enlarge, and select “Extend Volume” from the context menu.
