I have my home and car insured with RACV for over 17 years. The home insurance covered about $400k per year, and we have comprehensive car insurance.
About three years ago, we have a small fire at back of the house, and would require some work the may cost about $80k. RACV initially tried to settle $8k to use to fix the issue. We required them to repair; however, they tried to settle with us for $8k cash. We rejected.

When they started to apply a building permit, the drawing and specifications were rejected by the surveyor who said their specifications were not upto the Australian Standards. RACV came back to us and try again to cash settle us with about $52k. We rejected again.

RACV refuse to repair part of our house to meet Australian Standards. They were only willing to pay a certain amount cash to settle us although we told them we don’t need cash, but fix our home. Under the circumstances, we have to go to FOS. FOS decision was favoured to us, and RACV needs to repair part of my home to meet the Australian Standards.

However, RACV asked JP Flynn and A J Grand to provide quotation, and tried to settle us with about $51k. We asked another builder to quote to meet the Australian Standards, about $87k. Until today, almost three years passed, the matter has not resolved yet. We have to go back to FOS again.

We decided to take our home insurance out from RACV, and will never use them again.

We insured our car with RACV since we bought a brand new car about 16 years ago. Last year, our car was crashed by a third party, it was not our fault. RACV’s garage repaired the car; we felt that the car was not repaired well. When we asked the RACV garage, they said the problems are not from the car crash. After less than a year, the car was wrecked.

If we didn’t have these experience, we thought RACV was the best!
