FAQ - NSW selective high school placement test and selection process

Q: Are the students need to type in computer in the exam for writing section or is the exam computer free means paper based?

A: My understanding is: It’s paper based because

  1. The markers need to be able to read the handwriting. The writing must be completed on a maximum of two pages. The writing test is marked by trained markers.
  2. There are answer booklets for the other three tests. Multiple-choice tests are marked by computer. Answer booklets are identified by barcodes so students cannot be identified by the markers.

There are four tests. Three of the tests have multiple-choice questions and students answer in computer-marked answer booklets. These three tests are reading, mathematics and general ability, each lasting 40 minutes. The fourth test is a writing test lasting 20 minutes. A stimulus such as an image, a statement or a question is provided and students respond in writing. To gain high marks for their writing students should write only about the topic, include interesting and imaginative ideas and communicate their ideas clearly. The writing test is double marked by trained markers. The markers pay more attention to what is written than to how much is written. The markers need to be able to read the handwriting. The writing must be completed on a maximum of two pages. The markers will give no marks if the writing is not about the topic or if the writing is using someone else’s ideas or words.

Q: To calculate profile score, which academic yrs (yr 4,5,6) performance will be considered along with test score? My understanding of opportunity class is.

A: I think it’s not limited to opportunity class as the non-government primary school students can test for selective high schools too. It’s the moderated primary school assessment scores in English and mathematics which matters.

If a non-government primary school does not provide school assessment scores or the school assessment scores cannot be moderated the calculated placement score is calculated by counting the test scores for English and mathematics twice, instead of using a combination of test and school marks.

School assessment scores are provided for English and mathematics. They rank all candidates from a particular primary school in order of merit, showing the relative gaps between the students. So the score is a rank like ATAR (English 100 or  Maths 100 is a perfect score). The schools provides such a rank, so which academic yrs (yr 4,5,6) performance will be considered depends on school.
