Hi everyone!

I'll be moving from Melbourne to Sydney mid year 2013 and I was after some opinions on private schools in Sydney, specifically Redlands, Wenoa, Ravenswood and Pymble Ladies' College. What are your impressions or personal experience/knowledge of the above schools in particular the academic and social culture of these schools. Also, would you have any reccomendations of any other schools we may not be aware of in the lower North Shore area. My sister and I will be going into Year 7 and Year 9 respectively, and we are coming from an all girls private school, however we are open to co ed.

Thanks!

Alex

Hi Alex,

This is probably well after you've found your school - but I'm sure there are others in much the same boat who are looking for good quality schools.
There's of course a big difference from one school to the next, and in particular there are size considerations. This being May 2014, in Sydney there's now a chronic shortage of space in most schools, private schools included!
I personally advocate the smaller independent schools. There are a number of them around, and I find because of their independent nature they have great character and charm, and also promote a bit more of an independent spirit amongst their students. Again, this is not a hard-and-fast rule, but it tends to work by and large from what I have seen.

My personal school of choice would certainly be The Athena School. It's quite small (around 50 kids), and delivers both Primary and High School (up to Year 10). Really relaxed, great environment and friendly teachers. I went there myself during most of my Primary School years.

For anyone who's interested in checking it out, click here.

There's also the Association of Independent Schools which is a pretty awesome resource for the other independent schools out there. You can check out their website here.

Best,
Oliver
