PRIMARY SCHOOL REGULAR COURSE REGULAR COURSE (K - Year 6) The Primary Regular Course is the program that is offered to all students from Kindergarten through to Year 6. These courses continue throughout the year (regardless of school holidays) and are designed to further develop and expand students’ knowledge and understanding of fundamentals in all subject areas. The subjects offered to primary students doing the Regular Course are: Maths: starting from basics, this course works up to challenging levels of problem-solving English: develops a student’s reading comprehension skills, vocabulary and grammar – skills which also play an important role in many other subjects General Ability: improves the student’s ability to reason logically Writing Skills: an essential part of studying the English language, which gives a student confidence in his/her writing and general communication skills The Regular Course classes run for an hour each. CREATIVE WRITING (Year 5) Year 5 - 6 students are at a stage where they are preparing for the Selective Schools Exam or various Scholarship Exams. Recently, writing has become a compulsory part of the Selective Schools Exam. In order to cater for this change, James An College has developed this intensive course to help students achieve top results. What is covered in this course? · Analysis and interpretation of various text types · Development of expression and style · Structure and organisation of ideas · Reasoning and critical thinking · Exploring thought and content · Purpose and audience Do I still need to do the Regular Course? The regular course is a MUST to build STRONG FOUNDATIONS in the FUNDAMENTALS of English, such as spelling, grammar, vocabulary, reading, comprehension and other language skills. Students must have a FULL UNDERSTANDING of these fundamentals in order to further develop their writing skills at an ADVANCED level. SPECIAL READING AND WRITING (Year 2 - 6) The Special Reading and Writing Course supplements the Regular English Course by encouraging students to further develop expression, style and the mechanics of reading and writing. Improving your child's English skills will have a beneficial affect on their performance in other subject areas as well as their communication skills and consequently their level of confidence . This course encourages students to: · Write in various text types · Develop an understanding of the reading and writing processes · Develop questioning skills · Extend personal knowledge · Examine structure and organisation of text/stimulus material · Develop expression, style and mechanics in reading andwriting · Improve reading skills · Extend writing skills · Understand concepts of purpose, audience and style · Ananlyse and interpret content OPPORTUNITY CLASS TRIAL TEST COURSE (Year 4) The OC Trial Test Course is offered to Year 4 students to prepare them for the Opportunity Class Entrance Exam. This course is exclusive to James An College. The duration of the course is for 25 weeks from mid February – early August. Each class is for 2 hours per week. Each week students will complete two test papers (Test Paper A & Test Paper B) comprising of Maths, English and General Ability questions. This exam is set using the exact same format as the real OC Test. Students will receive a computerised test report in the following week that gives a close indication as to how the student will perform in the actual Opportunity Class Test. SELECTIVE SCHOOL TRIAL TEST COURSE (Year 5 - 6) The Selective School Trial Test Course is a 40-week course exclusive to James An College that allows students to practice over 3000 unique questions in Maths and English. The course duration will be for 3 hours per week and all questions are fully explained. A computerised system will be used to produce individual test reports every week. These reports will provide a close indication of the student’s performance in the actual Selective Schools Exam. PRIMARY SCHOOL SPECIAL GENERAL ABILITY COURSE (Year 5 - 6) The Special GA Course is a comprehensive 40-week test preparation course exclusive to James An College. This course involves practice exams covering over 4000 unique questions that are designed to teach different approaches to problem solving. General Ability challenges students’ interpretation and problem solving skills. Doing well in General Ability can make all the difference between success and failure in the Selective School Test as it is worth 50% of the test mark. This special course serves as an extension to our Regular Courses. PRIMARY SCHOOL HOLIDAY COURSES (Year 1 - 6) Four times a year we hold the James An College Holiday Course for 1 - 3 weeks. This is a great opportunity for your child to make the most of their school holidays. By getting a head-start in their studies, students feel more confident and motivated to achieve excellent results. The Holiday Courses are generally held during the following times: · Summer Holiday Course: Early January · Autumn Holiday Course: Mid April · Winter Holiday Course: Early July · Spring Holiday Course: Late September The subjects covered include: Maths, English, General Ability and Writing.
